Our Fearless Leaders

Barbara Nigh's harmonious experiences with Sweet Adelines began in 1978 when she joined the chorus. She also got involved with a quartet which, over the next 25 years, took on a number of names - "A Touch of Velvet," "Rhythm Review," "Harmonichords," "Lucky Ladies" and "Four for the Road" - but retained its focus on quality music performed with joy and enthusiasm.

Shortly after joining the Flower Valley Chorus, Barb was recruited to serve as Bulletin Editor, then Vice President and later President. She served in the roles of Secretary and Treasurer and became the unofficial assistant director. In 1982, she attended an Assistant Directors' Seminar in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In 1988, Barb accepted the directorship and continued in that position until 2001 when she retired from the post. She again took on the directorship in 2004 upon retirement from her day job as Supervisor of Health Services and School nurse at Lompoc High and Lompoc Valley Middle School.

Barb has attended several Directors' Seminars all of which have provided memorable moments as well as training she has shared with her chorus.

In 2014, our Chorus was blessed to welcome long-time member, Cindy Pilios, as Co-Director, sharing the responsibilities with Barb. Cindy is a 35-year member of Sweet Adelines, having sung with Flower Valley, South Valley Sound, Tri City Sound and the Pacific Horizon Chorus.

Cindy and Barb have sung together in the aforementioned quartets since 1980, currently continuing their quartetting experience singing with Linda Hicks and Lyndell Penney, also Tri City Sound members, in "Swingtime."

Cindy has been Assistant Director for many years. She was Show Chairman for a number of Chapter shows, making many of the costumes. Cindy has assisted in teaching choreography in recent years.
